Elizabeth (Woodcock) Grafton
THOMASTON -- Elizabeth (Woodcock) Grafton passed away peacefully on Monday, Feb. 19, 2007, at the SpringBrook Nursing facility in Westbrook after a brief illness.
She was born on March 7, 1916, in Portland, the oldest child of Earl and Ora (Emery) Woodcock. She grew up and lived most of her life in Thomaston. She graduated from Thomaston High School in 1933 and from Bates College in 1937.
She married Forrest Grafton in June 1939. They lived for more than 50 years on Brooklyn Heights in Thomaston.
She was a teacher and librarian, working first in Rockland and then in Thomaston, retiring from Georges Valley High School after 32 years of teaching.
She was a lifelong and active member of the Thomaston Federated Church, teaching Sunday school, serving as deacon and was president of the Federated Church Women group.
She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma society, serving 10 years as treasurer. She was also a member of the Friends of Montpelier, the Warren Field and Garden Club, and Maine Retired Teachers Association.
In 2000, she moved to Cape Elizabeth, and in 2005 moved to the SpringBrook nursing facility in Westbrook.
She is predeceased by her husband Forrest in 1989, and two sisters, Elonia Turner and Marjorie Hesselgren.
Survivors include a daughter, Joan Mills of South Portland, a son, Jon Grafton of Shirley, Mass.; four grandchildren, William (Jody) Mills and Robert (Christine) Mills, all of South Portland; Scott (Stephanie) Grafton of Sanford; and Beth Grafton of Sterling, Mass.; and six great- grandchildren, Melinda and Elisha Walls, Kailina and Allison Mills, and Forrest and Paige Grafton; a brother, Richard Woodcock of Thomaston; several nephews and several cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 1 p.m. at the Thomaston Federated Church, 8 Hyler St., Thomaston.
